Just a note, to get myself back on track, I have been terribly absent!! I need to set a schedule and stick to it for blogging. Afraid I have gotten so involved with my business that I have neglected my blog. I love writing and if you have suggestions about being more frequent, I would appeciate tips and suggestions.

Our planter & garden are looking great already have fresh peaches & grape tomatoes on the vine. Our new Meyer lemon tree has fruit. Rain this winter has more blooms in the desert than I have ever seen.

4 Healthy Living Tips for Caring for Someone with a Heart Condition

I know from experience how much of a transition—and a learning curve—becoming a caregiver entails. It can be especially hard if the person you’re caring for has a heart condition.

Caregiving can feel like an overwhelming responsibility. Not only are you likely adjusting to having a new person in your home, but you also have to factor caretaking responsibilities into your life. Sometimes, you might feel like you are just “getting through” each day. But you can do so much more than help your loved one pass the time—you can help improve his or her quality of life.

In conjunction with your doctor’s orders, here are four healthy living tips for caring for someone with a heart condition:

1. Tailor exercise to their ability

Your loved one may not be able to do the recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly. Yet, in most cases, older adults can work activity into their lives. The key is tailoring activities to your loved one’s needs and abilities. A walk around the block may be an accomplishment for some, while others will be able to go on a longer stroll each evening.

Also, join in. Everyone benefits from social interaction—including you. After your loved one exercises, ask how she feels. Chances are, she’ll notice some positive physical changes after just a week or two of moving more. Encourage but don’t push, and always be sure to follow doctor’s orders when it comes to physical exertion.

2. Get social

Research shows that seniors who are more social stay healthier. One study of over 14,000 adults found that seniors with “greater social capital”—living in a trusting community with helpful neighbors—were more physically mobile.[1] In addition to welcoming your loved one into your family life, take him out on social outings. Going out to lunch, a community event or a park are just a few examples. Encourage him to participate in a local senior center, take up a new hobby or even join a water aerobics class. The more your loved one gets out, the more likely he is to remain vital into his older years.

3. Eat well

If your loved one has a heart condition, a balanced diet is a necessary part of supporting heart health. But no one wants to be the only one at the table eating a “special” meal. Instead of preparing separate food, get your entire family eating well. Prepare heart-healthy dishes like “Kale Walnut Pesto Pasta with Salmon,” and enjoy them with your loved one.

4. Eat less frequently and get creative

Since digestive efficiency decreases with age, your loved one should eat smaller portions more frequently than she did in her younger years. Increase nutrition during meals by making easy-to-digest juices, shakes and smoothies. Add greens, chia seeds and protein powder to increase the nutrient content without making much difference in taste. Adding targeted nutritional supplements like a multivitamin, vitamin D and Omega-3 fish oil can also help support wellness.

3 or 4 Things to Help with Joint Pain

Does cooler weather make you a little achy, joints a little stiffer or causes you to move a little slower?
Many of us feel the “weather in our bones”. No real evidence supports this but I definitely notice that cooler weather makes me want to curl up in an afghan with a good book or watch “It’s a Wonderful World” for the 80th time. Not what I need or should do, and as years of experience, mine and others have shown me, I would like to share some things I do.

Advice for less joint pain:

Eating healthy, not just to be full… It was more difficult when I was a young mom because a new “diet” was introduced every month and I was always on one to lose a few pounds. As a kid, we lived on a farm with fresh vegetables, fruit and meat, once a week which was home grown chicken. Never connected to how healthy it was for us until I was older and began to study a healthier lifestyle.

Too many bad choices await us every day through Grocer shelves and Fast Food Stores. So you must determine to make a change to your lifestyle and not temporary fixes.

Eating colorful is most important, Fresh whole vegetables, fruit and whole grains, should replace processed and refined foods that cause inflammation. Antioxidants in spinach, kale, cabbage and carrots are a first line of defense providing you vitamin K, I get vitamin C from red bell peppers, they have more than oranges and through much experimenting, I found citrus caused arthritis flare-ups.
I also make sure I get Omega 3’s from wild salmon. My old-timey doctor taught me many years ago “to eat fish 5 times a week”, he said. He was waaaay ahead of science.
I have found I need to supplement with omega 3, Herbalifeline, it is an anti-inflammatory and I use a mango flavored aloe vera drink, the combo of the two took about 8 weeks for me to feel the difference in pain. I use Joint Support for building & strengthening cartilage around the joints. I also use a Xtra Cal, a calcium supplement, that is two fold for all the calcium I need plus vitamin D.

Walking is so important, I know it feels better not to move but it does not irritate joints to move, the synovial fluid of the joints in the human body is a thick liquid that lubricates the joint, allows for ease of movement and helps feeds the cartilage. So movement helps circulate the fluid & lessen pain.

Last, but not least is Losing weight is also helpful and less strain on stressed & inflamed joints.

Why I Pour Out My Feelings

I am a people person, I love being with new, old and interesting people. I have 2 traits that support my feelings, one, I am curious about you, your friend, your family and two, I have this caring nature, a part of me that I can’t seem to turn off.

When I go to the mall, the park or anywhere that people convene…..When I see a person coming towards me, I look them in the eye, smile and say, “Hi, how you doin?” Some look at me like I am strange or shoot me an offended look, some don’t bother to respond, seem lost in thought but my favorite meet my eyes, smile & answer me with a positive note in their voice. Exchanging a friendly hello gives a little burst of pleasure that someone noticed them, gave them a “heart smile” I may be the only smile, they have seen today.

If I have extra time I may join someone on a bench, I greet them and start conversation by noticing things I can comment to them.

I don’t get to the mall as much, so this is my smile to them on paper.Kay
